A glimpse into the Thomas Edison High School of Technology’s SkillsUSA competition.

It’s always a delight to connect with the next generation of builders, creatives, makers, and doers. Earlier this month, we had the chance to do just that!

Our very own Daniel Carrero and Matt Kanne proudly served as volunteer construction judges at the Thomas Edison High School of Technology’s annual SkillsUSA local competition! SkillsUSA is a student-led partnership of education and industry that’s “building the future skilled workforce our nation depends on with graduates who are career ready, day one.”

Students in the school’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) program are preparing to enter meaningful careers and/or higher education. The SkillsUSA local competition provides these young people an excellent opportunity to showcase their skills, engage in rigorous competition, and receive expert feedback from industry practitioners.

We were both inspired by the quality of the construction craft we reviewed. It’s clear that the students are gaining valuable experience in their program, supporting residential home design and building projects in the Montgomery County area. We were also impressed by the students' personal skills in the competition, as they explained their work and answered our questions.

Yes, we judged the students’ performances. Some will be winners – and will go on to compete at the state-level competitions in April 2024. As for the rest, we can confidently say that the future of construction is in exceptional hands. Well done, Thomas Edison CTE students!
